OKMULGEE – The MCN Mvskoke Language Program (MLP) hosted their third annual Honkv Onvkuce ghost storytelling event at the MCN Dome on Oct. 25. This year the program added a costume contest, games, and prizes.
The program included chili, hotdogs,frito chili pies and stew for a more home cooked meal feeling- meals were free for everyone to enjoy.
MCN MLP Project/Media Coordinator Jordan Squire (Mvskoke) spoke to Mvskoke Media about this year’s annual event.
Originally, the event was scheduled to happen at the MCN Omniplex but due to the weather it was held at the Mvskoke Dome. It was important to provide interactive activities for the families to have fun, and a big space was necessary.
“This year we wanted to be interactive and involve the language as much as possible. A lot of things got shifted once we had to move inside of the dome due to the weather but we tried to be positive,” Squire said.
“Our staff met and pitched different ideas on what kind of games could be done. We had a cake walk, ring toss, tug of war, and a cornhole session. All activities had prizes for the winners.”
Squire enjoys seeing this event get bigger each year. The idea came about several years ago when Squire wanted to hear ghost stories. It turned into a big event for their program. Each year their program learns from previous years how to make it better and bigger for citizens.
“Previous years were us finding out what works, what doesn’t, how we can improve stages. Although we were still trying to find our footing, all events have always been a big success,” Squire shared.
“We grew from having 50-75 come the first year to 100-120 attending the second year and this year had more than 150 people attend.”
