TULSA – On Thursday, April 2, the Tribal Women Veterans Summit will be held at the Tulsa River Spirit Casino from 8:30 am and end at 4:30 pm. The summit is open to women who have served in the military in any capacity.

The idea for the summit began when the MCN Veterans Affairs Service Office noticed that few of their women veterans were participating in their events or visiting their office, explained MCN Veterans Affairs Assistant Director Rachel Riddle (Mvskoke).

According to Riddle, their goal in hosting this event is to reach out to their female veterans, not only to provide them with great education but also to ensure they receive the services they need. This event also provides an opportunity for each of them to meet and form relationships with other Native veterans.

“We felt there was a need to not only reach out to include them, but to get them involved.  In visiting with other agencies and our lady veterans, we also discovered their need to talk about events and issues that are shared as women,” Riddle said.

Riddle stated that this event started small among local attendees; however, it has grown each year, with participants from all across the United States.

“It’s grown to not just include and educate our own lady veterans but other Native women veterans from across the country,” said Riddle. “We’re glad to see not only the huge participation of native women veterans but also the desire and request for vendors to be a part of this event.”

“We will continue to host this as a great need and help for our Native women veterans. Who have served this country honorably and likewise made our Muscogee Nation proud of them. Salute.”
