OKMULGEE – Muscogee (Creek) Nation educators will soon have another opportunity to receive funding for classroom supplies as applications open Aug. 15 for the Nation’s teacher grant program.
The program awards eligible educators up to $500 to purchase materials that enhance classroom learning, helping offset expenses many teachers often pay out of their own pockets. Applications will be accepted through Sept. 15.
Now entering its second year, the teacher grant program was established through legislation approved by the MCN National Council. Representatives Dode Barnett and Second Speaker Thomasene Osborn said the program was created to help ease the financial burden many teachers face when purchasing classroom supplies.
“We felt very strongly that that money had to go to the classroom,” Rep. Barnett said.
Rep. Barnett said lawmakers frequently saw requests from schools for projects such as scoreboards or athletic tournaments. While those requests were worthwhile, she said the Council wanted to create a program that directly supports teachers and students by placing resources where they are needed most.
She said many educators, particularly those in rural and Title I schools, often purchase classroom supplies themselves because school budgets cannot cover every need.
“There’s a lot of times just not enough money for really simple things,” Rep. Barnett said, pointing to everyday classroom necessities such as paper and storage, as well as classroom activities.
Rep. Osborn said her experience representing rural communities helped shape the legislation. While working alongside Rep. Barnett and other council members, she discussed the different challenges educators face across the reservation.
“We thought this would be a good way to give back to our teachers,” Rep. Osborn said.
Applications are available through the National Council’s website. Educators are asked to submit a description of how the funds will be used, and members of the Health Education and Welfare Committee review each application individually.
Rep. Osborn encouraged applicants to provide a complete list of the classroom needs so they can receive the full $500 award.
Last year, the committee awarded grants to 107 educators, distributing more than $36,000 to classrooms across the reservation. Rep. Osborn said additional funding remains available, and lawmakers hope even more eligible teachers will apply this year.
“We want to do a better job about marketing this program,” Rep. Osborn said. “There’s more money.”
The grant program has already evolved since its first year. Lawmakers expanded eligibility to include pre-kindergarten teachers, Muscogee language teachers, and educators with alternative certifications after receiving feedback from applicants. They also adjusted this year’s application timeline to better accommodate teachers whose certifications are finalized closer to the start of the school year.
Both representatives said the program will continue to grow as they receive additional feedback from educators.
“We’re learning as we go,” Rep. Osborn said. “We appreciate and encourage feedback.”
Rep. Barnett said one challenge lawmakers continue to face is determining exactly how many Muscogee educators are eligible for the program because no agency maintains a comprehensive count. Even so, she hopes the grants send a clear message that the Nation values its educators and recognizes the work they do every day.
“I hope educators remember that the Mvskoke Nation showed up for them,” Barnett said. “I hope they feel supported.”
Applications for the 2026 teacher grant program will be accepted Aug. 15 through Sept. 15. Mvskoke citizens teaching K-12 in the MCN Reservation may apply for up to $500 in classroom funding by completing the application available on the Muscogee (Creek) Nation National Council website. Lawmakers encourage educators across the reservation to apply and share feedback as the program continues to grow and evolve.
