MVSKOKE RESERVATION – On Dec. 9 the Health, Education, and Welfare Committee held a mixed virtual and in-person meeting. Passed legislation will go on to the next full council meeting, unless otherwise noted.
The committee addressed the following legislation, the interpretation of which is attributed to language in the bills:
TR 25-119 A tribal resolution of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation authorizing the Principal Chief to submit a plan of management and apply for grant funds from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food and Nutrition Services and commit a tribal match. Representative Thomasine Yahola Osborn sponsored the bill, which passed 3-0.
If adopted into law by full council, the Nation will apply for a $13,627,324 grant to fund the summer EBT program. According to the bill there are currently around 105,000 school meal-eligible children in the Nation that qualify for the program. Each child will receive $120 in EBT credit to buy food during the summer. If the Nation is approved for the grant, they will provide $1,027,324 in matching funds.
NCA 25-121 A law of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation authorizing the expenditure of grant funds awarded from the Department of Health and Human Services Administration For Children and Families for the benefit of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation Office of Child Care. Representative Anna Marshall sponsored the bill, which passed 3-0.
If adopted into law by full council, the bill will expend $307,655 in grant funds for the MCN Office of Child Care for “day-to-day activities and direct services to childcare providers and families.”
