OKMULGEE, Okla. – The Business, Finance and Justice committee and Land, Natural Resources, and Cultural Preservation committee held a joint meeting at the Mound Building on April 22.

Passed legislation is subject to full council approval during the regular session.

The committee addressed the following legislation, the interpretation of which is attributed to language in the bill:

NCA 25-017 A law of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation creating new law in MCNCA Title 30 Chapter 2, entitled “Legislative Districts” to rename the Creek district boundary jurisdiction to Yuchi District was struck down by the joint committee. The law was sponsored by Representative Dode Barnett of the Creek District. It was previously postponed on Jan. 21 and March 25. The bill’s substitute failed to pass with a vote of 4-5.

According to the legislation, this law would have changed the name of the Creek District, where Rep.Barnett and Representative Freeman serve as representatives, to the Yuchi District in order to honor the Yuchi tribe and its close relationship with the Muscogee (Creek) Nation.
