HENRYETTA, Okla.- Apekv ceremonial ground will be hosting their annual “Honkv Bash” Mushball tournament on Nov. 2. There will be a mushball tournament, horseshoe tournament, carnival games, concession available, spook trail and costume contest. The fundraiser event will help the Apekv grounds for their utilities and expenses that they will need for their ground. Everyone is welcome to attend and show up in their best costume. Visitors are asked to be respectful towards their ground. Drugs and alcohol are strictly forbidden.
There will be prizes for the mushball tournament for first and second place, the horseshoe tournament will take place during the day. Towards the end of the night there will be a costume contest for first-third place with a cash prize.
Apekv ceremonial ground member Corey King (Mvskoke) will be helping put this event together and he will also be participating in the mushball tournament on a team called the “Shapeshifter”.
The tournament will be a ten team bracket. This is a one glove, one pitch swing bat style tournament, with no walks nor fouls and girls are able to float. This game will start at 9 a.m.
“We started doing these tournaments three years ago, but it wasn’t too big up until last year and everybody started doing mushball tournaments. It just seemed like it really took off last year, this is our third year,” King said.
This year the ground is hosting a spook trail that will begin in the evening.
One of the highlights for children is a long standing Apekv ground activity in which candy is scattered on the ground. According to King, the tradition has been going since he was a child.
“We always have a big box of candy, by the end of the day of the event or night we put all of the candy in the box and have all the kids get out there,” King said “That’s kind of like, thanks for showing up, supporting us and we are trying to keep that tradition alive.”
He enjoys seeing everyone gathering around and enjoying themselves at this event.
“Just seeing everybody smile and laugh that’s the main part. And just to see everybody come out. I hope everybody comes out, it’s open to anybody,” King said. The event takes place at 16740 Magnolia Road in Henryetta.
