OKMULGEE, Oklahoma-On Tuesday, December 10, 2019 College of the Muscogee Nation’s Tribal Leadership Circle accepted a $500 donation to purchase food items for students.  Along with a yearly holiday food drive, the TLC group used the donations to provide Christmas dinner baskets for students and their families.

East Central Oklahoma Commissioned Officers Association stepped up to donate $500 to this food drive.

“We wanted to let CMN know that there is a tribal community who supports what they are doing in working towards achieving their educational goals,” said Advanced Practice Nurse in Diabetes at the Koweta Indian Health Facility Amanda Wyatt.

According to Wyatt commission officers from across Creek Nation held a fundraiser and a raffle to gather the monetary donation for CMN.

“We were very grateful that Amanda called us in regards to giving a donation,” CMN general education instructor and current advisor for TLC Caci Biggs said. “The additional money helped us purchase more food items to reach more students during the holidays.”

According to Biggs, CMN’s goal was to provide ten students and their family with a meal for Christmas.

“With the help from this monetary donation and donations from CMN faculty and staff students ended up providing 15 meal baskets and an additional 5 hams,” said Biggs. “More than we originally anticipated, which was wonderful.”

TLC also gathered gifts for two Angels off the Angel Tree.

“In the past TLC has done several service projects with the area communities,” CMN tribal service instructor and former advisor of TLC Mackie Moore said. “We have done a lot of work with presenting cultural activities to local schools. But our largest event was helping out with the Indigenous Celebration back in November at The Gathering Place in Tulsa.”

Students held stickball demonstrations for the public to view, as well as took part in the stomp dance that was held on Nov. 9, 2019.

“We have a lot more exciting things planned for this semester,” said Biggs.

TLC is a student led organization formed to provide current students an opportunity to expand their culture, education, community, and fellowship amongst the student body. For more information on the College of the Muscogee Nation visit www.cmn.edu
