OKMULGEE, Oklahoma – The Muscogee (Creek) Nation National Council held an Emergency Session on February 10 via teleconference.
The Council addressed the following legislation, the interpretation of which is attributed to language in the bills:
NCA 22-014 Repealing MCNCA Title 23, entitled “Hunting and Fishing Fayetv Hvtvm Makwiyetv” and creating and new MCNCA Title 23, entitled “Wildlife Code”. Representative Leonard Gouge sponsored the law, which was adopted 15-0.
The Nation is seeking to update the Hunting and Fishing Code and establish a comprehensive Wildlife Code with Conservation Regulations in its place.
According to Trent Kissee, Director of Agriculture and Natural Resources, his department has been working on this since 2017.
After working with the Lighthorse and Game Rangers line by line, Kissee said most of the code has structurally remained the same.
“A lot of this is delineating the administration side from the enforcement side,” he said.
There will now be annual review of the code each February as stated in the updated Wildlife Code.
Kissee said this is MCN code only with no other partnerships between other tribal nations or the state.
The code only allows Muscogee citizens to use the Nation’s designated properties and only applies to Muscogee (Creek) citizens and the land owned by the Nation.
The session can be watched on www.mcnnc.com or the National Council YouTube page.
