MVSKOKE RESERVATION – During November, tribes across the country celebrate their rich cultures and histories during Native American Heritage Month.
Education is sharing center stage with celebration this month as the Muscogee (Creek) Nation Language Program, PBS, and Tulsa City-County Library join in on the festivities.
The Muscogee Nation Culture and Humanities Department’s language programs are putting on their first annual Language Month this November. Some events include Euchee Field Day, Mvskoke Reels film screening, and a language showcase. The full list of events is available on the Pum Fulletv Mvskokvlke Emiyetv Empvtakv Facebook page.
PBS is showing programming all month long that focuses on Native voices and stories. One of the featured programs is “Medicine Ball,” a documentary that follows two Native American basketball players at the University of Minnesota Morris. The documentary explores the campus’ past as the Morris Industrial School for Indians and how today’s student-athletes have reclaimed basketball as a symbol of “hope, resilience, and cultural pride.”
“Medicine Ball” premieres on PBS November 9 at 9 p.m. Central Time. It will also be available to stream on PBS.org and the PBS app.
Viewers can also catch a new season of “Pat Jinich Explores PanAmericana” and a new documentary called “Coming Home: From Shadowland to Spiritworld.” The documentary tells the story of a Kashia Pomo Tribal elder and a pair of young Tribal members as they undertake a “journey seeking coastal land return and self-recovery that inspires healing, spiritual revival, and a search for the truth about those Tribal members gone missing and murdered.”
“Bad Press” will also be available to stream on pbs.org and the PBS app. “Bad Press” is a 2023 documentary that follows Mvskoke Media during the fight for free press in the Muscogee Nation after the National Council voted to repeal the Free Press Act in 2018.
A full list of PBS programming for Native American Heritage Month is available on the PBS website.
Tulsa City-County Library is putting on a series of events and workshops in honor of Native American Heritage Month through its American Indian Resource Center. Workshops include language classes and traditional craft “make and take” classes. The full activities calendar is available on the TCCL website.
The 40th Annual Council Oak Tree Ceremony is taking place Saturday, Nov. 7 at 10 a.m. at the Muscogee Nation Council Oak Park. There will be food and vendors at the event.
