MVSKOKE RESERVATION – On Tuesday, May 12, the Health, Education, and Welfare Committee held a mixed virtual and in-person meeting. Passed legislation will go on to the next full council meeting, unless otherwise noted.
The committee addressed the following legislation, the interpretation of which is attributed to language in the bills:
NCA 26-076 A law of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation amending NCA 22-045 (A law of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation authorizing the expenditure of grant funds awarded from the U.S. Department of the Interior Bureau of Indian Education, Tribal Education Department Grant for the benefit of the Eufaula Dormitory). Representative Lora Harjo-King sponsored the bill, and it passed 4-0.
If adopted by the full council, the amendment doubles the funding amount to $640,000. The grant will be used to purchase computer software, playground equipment, and graduation garments among other things. Grant funds will also be used for their wellness program, Mvskoke language classes, and ACT reimbursements. The supplemental funds the amendment adds are through the BIA.
