OKMULGEE, Okla. – The Muscogee (Creek) National Council held the monthly Business, Finance and Justice Committee session at the Mound Building on Nov. 7.
Passed legislation is subject to full council approval during the regular session.
The committee addressed the following legislation, the interpretation of which is attributed to language in the bills:
NCA 24-004 A law of the Muscogee (Creek) National Council confirming Denise Henry to serve on the Lighthorse Police Commission was rejected by the committee. The law was sponsored by Representative Sandra Golden of the Okfuskee District. It was rejected with a vote of 2-3, with Chairman Hufft breaking a tie with a No vote.
The law nominating Henry was postponed. TR 24-101 A Tribal Resolution of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation confirming the nomination of James Jennings to serve as a Special Justice of the Supreme Court of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation was postponed indefinitely by the committee. The resolution was sponsored by Rep. Golden and was previously postponed on Aug. 15 and Sept. 19. It was postponed indefinitely with a vote of 4-0.
The law nominating Jennings was postponed.
NCA 24-144 A law of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation approving the Comprehensive Annual Budget for Fiscal Year 2025 and providing for appropriations was passed by the committee. The law was sponsored by Representative Robert Hufft of the Tulsa District. It was passed with a vote of 3-1.
If adopted, this law will approve the Comprehensive Annual Budget for 2025 for the Muscogee Nation and appropriate funds accordingly.
NCA 24-145 A law of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation amending MCNCA Title 49 entitled “Independent Muscogee (Creek) Press” was passed by the committee. The law was sponsored by Representative Dode Barnett of the Creek District. It was passed with a vote of 4-0.
If adopted, this law will provide Mvskoke Media board members with a larger stipend of $500.00 rather than $200.00, and will allow the board to hire legal counsel.
