OKMULKE, Oklv. – The Muscogee (Creek) Nation’s National Council held an emergency session at the Mound Building on Aug 30.
The council addressed the following legislation, the interpretation of which is attributed to language in the bill:
TR 24-109 A tribal resolution of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation authorizing the Principal Chief to execute a Tribal Plaintiff Release of All Claims in order to settle claims against Altria. Speaker Randall Hicks sponsored the legislation, which was adopted nearly unanimously 9-1. Representative Joyce Deere voted against the legislation.
The $1,184,313.83 settlement is the estimated amount of the Nation’s share from the suit. The suit was originally filed on February 13, 2023 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern Division of California and alleged that the Altira Group Distribution Company partook in racketeering.
