Okmulgee, Okla. – The Muscogee (Creek) Nation National Council held an Emergency Session via teleconference on June 6.
Representative Patrick Freeman Jr. was absent during the session.
The Council addressed the following legislation, the interpretation of which is attributed to language in the bills:
NCA 23-064 Authorizing an appropriation to the Muscogee (Creek) Nation Realty Department for ad valorem taxes. Representative Joseph Hicks sponsored the legislation with Representative Galen Cloud as co-sponsor, which was adopted 14-0.
The realty department determined there is a need to provide assistance to Muscogee (Creek) citizens for property taxes. These citizens are in danger of losing their property and don’t qualify for other programs offered within the Nation.
Muscogee (Creek) Nation Realty Department Director Sonya McIntosh recommended that an appropriation of $75,000 be expended to help citizens in the upcoming tax sale that will be happening within the next two weeks.
McIntosh claims the legislation will be revised for the future, this is merely for emergency purposes.
