OKMULGEE, Okla. – The Business, Finance and Justice committee and Land, Natural Resources, and Cultural Preservation committee held a joint meeting at the Mound Building on March 25.
Passed legislation is subject to full council approval during the regular session.
The committee addressed the following legislation, the interpretation of which is attributed to language in the bills:
TR 25-024 A tribal resolution of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation authorizing the Principal Chief to execute a lease agreement with Oral Roberts University, an Oklahoma corporation, for Mvskoke Media to lease office space at Cityplex Towers was passed by the joint committee. The resolution was sponsored by Representative Dode Barnett of the Creek District. It was passed with a vote of 9-0.
If adopted, this resolution will allow Mvskoke Media to use Cityplex Towers in Tulsa, OK as an office space for the purpose of establishing a new home office for its news team.
TR 25-025 A tribal resolution of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation authorizing the Principal Chief to submit a grant application to the Department of Energy Office of Indian Energy Policy and Programs’ Tribal Clean Energy Planning and Development Grant for the benefit of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation’s Tribal Utility Authority was passed by the joint committee. The resolution was sponsored by Rep. Barnett. It was passed with a vote of 9-0.
According to the legislation,this resolution will allow the Nation to reduce energy costs, improve energy independence, enhance climate resiliency, and improve the quality of life for Tribal Citizens.
NCA 25-017 A law of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation creating new law in MCNCA Title 30 Chapter 2, entitled “Legislative Districts” to rename the Creek district boundary jurisdiction to Yuchi District was postponed by the joint committee until next month. The law was sponsored by Rep. Barnett. It was postponed with a vote of 9-0, and was previously postponed on Jan. 21.
According to the legislation, this law will change the name of the Creek District, where Rep.Barnett and Representative Freeman serve as representatives, to the Yuchi District in order to honor the Yuchi tribe and its close relationship with the Muscogee (Creek) Nation.
