OKMULGEE – On September 3, Muscogee (Creek) Nation Elder Services will host a Grandparent’s Day of chair volleyball at the Mvskoke Dome in Okmulgee. This day will be full of fun, fellowship, and door prizes. Breakfast will be served at 8 a.m. by MCN Elderly Nutrition, and the games will start at 9 a.m. This event is for elders that are 55 and older, and up to two guests each.
All players must pre-register by August 20; attendees are asked to pre-register as well.
Each team must have six players. MCN Elder Services can fill teams for those registered with fewer than 6. Three players must be 55 years or older and enrolled MCN citizens- roll number is required when pre-registering. The teams can be made up of men, women and children.
MCN Office Manager of Elder Services Angi Neumeyer (Mvskoke) spoke to Mvskoke Media about what will be happening throughout the day, their goals and what she enjoys most about hosting these activities for the elders.

In addition to breakfast and chair volleyball, this year the event features information booths with prizes. Presently, volunteers signed up are MCN Youth Services, MCN Elderly Nutrition, College of the Muscogee Nation Health and Wellness, and MCN Diabetes Program.
According to Neumeyer, the program decided to incorporate chair volleyball because many elders show an interest in the game. Every year the event features a different activity. Last year, with a turnout of 250 elders, the activity was yard and board games.
Neumeyers’ main goal is celebrating MCN grandparents and giving them a day of fun. “It’s just a way to let them gather together and they like to visit with each other. We like to get to know them better,” Neumeyer said.
She enjoys being able to meet and see elders on any day. “They always have stories that they like to tell and you never know what they’re going to tell you. But it’s nice to have a face to the name. We get phone calls and talk to them a lot, but we don’t always get to meet them,” Neumeyer said.
