GLENPOOL, Oklahoma– Muscogee (Creek) Nation held its fourth annual Elder’s Sweet Heart Dance on Feb. 7at the Glenpool Conference Center.

The elder’s that attended the event were able to meet with friends dance and have dinner.

Citizens that did attend the dance had to be at least fifty-five years of age and have proof that they were a Muscogee (Creek) Nation citizen and or attendants had to be guests and also had to be fifty-five to attend the dance.

The Sweetheart Dance had two contests as well. Cutest couple and the community dance off contest were named at the event.

Cutest couple contest had partners compete in a twenty second dance off to win a free night at the River Spirit Casino.

The community dance off was for the surrounding communities that attended and gave them the chance to show their best dance moves.

Nettie and Jim Harjo won the cutest couple contest. They recently celebrated their 49th anniversary on New Years Eve. The couple have been attending the Elder’s Sweet Heart Dance for three years and they were very surprised that they won.

“This couple used to go out dancing every other month or so until we had to get canes,” said Nettie Harjo.

Canes did not stop them at all from dancing the night away and winning the contest.

“The Elder’s Sweet Heart Dance has a normal group of about 100 to 150 people attend,” said MCN Office Manager of Senior Services Christy Carson.

The Elder’s Sweet Heart Dance is not held on Valentines Day because MCN wants it to be more open for attendants that may have plans.

“There are a lot of regulars that attend the Elder’s Sweet Heart Dance and about half of the elders attend other events that are held through Senior Services,” said Carson.

“MCN Senior Services funds the Elder’s Sweet Heart Dance,” said Carson

MCN Senior Services can also help seniors throughout the year, such as cutting wood for them in the winter and mowing their lawn in the summer.
