OKMULGEE, Okla. – The Muscogee (Creek) Nation National Council held a Health, Education and Welfare committee meeting Sept 20.
The Council addressed the following legislation, the interpretation of which is attributed to language in the bills:
NCA 23-103 A law of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation authorizing the expenditure of grant funds awarded from The Department of Health and Human services, Indian Health Service (IHS), Produce Prescription Pilot Program Grant. Representative Mary Crawford sponsored the legislation, which passed 4-0. This will be presented to the full council at the next regular session.
IHS gave $2,500,000 in grant funds to the MCN Department of Health. This is to help reduce food insecurity and provide better healthcare outcomes for American Indians and Alaska Native people by expanding access to fresh produce and other traditional foods within Native communities.
NCA 23-104 A law of the MCN authorizing the expenditure of grant funds awarded from the Institute of Museum and Library services for the benefit of the College of the Muscogee Nation. Representative Anna Marshall sponsored this legislation, which passed 4-0. This will be presented to the full council at the next regular session.
The 2023 Native American Library Services grant awarded $10,000 to CMN. This will be used for cultural programming and outreach activities. It will focus on increasing the number of patrons visiting and using the college’s library. According to the bill, it will also reactivate ten hotspots for students to stay connected to school work.
