BRISTOW, Oklv. – On Aug. 29 a moccasin-making class was held at the Bristow Indian Community Center. This event was hosted specifically for the Native youth between the ages of 12-18 years old and was open to all Mvskoke students to attend. Participants were able to make and take moccasins.
Muscogee (Creek) Nation Connect the Disconnect of the Mvskoke Nation Youth Services Haydn Wilson (Mvskoke) mentioned that this specific craft has been requested by citizens who were interested in taking a class on it.
Wilson said that six students joined in on this session. Taylor Bellamy helped each of them to create and sew their own moccasins.
This was Wilson’s second time hosting a cultural class. He enjoys seeing everyone come together to partake in activities. He also saw staff members make moccasins for themselves.
Wilson is grateful to have this opportunity to connect youth with their culture. “Connecting the children with their tribal heritage, it’s always fun to see everyone happy and having a good time,” Wilson said.
The department plans to host more cultural classes in the future, however there are no specific dates or times set yet. To keep up to date on these activities, follow the Mvskoke Youth Services Facebook page, Mvskoke Nation Youth Services.
