SULPHUR, Oklahoma– Muscogee (Creek) citizen Owen West will be starting her junior year at Sulphur High School this fall, where she has remained on the Superintendent Honor Roll since her freshman year and has succeeded in her extra-curricular activities.
The 16-year-old student is the daughter of Leanne and Paul West.
West participates in Student Council, Foreign Language Club and Key Club.
She is a student athlete playing in softball, golf, powerlifting, track and basketball.
“This year I qualified for state in softball, golf and powerlifting,” West said. “I came in second for golf and powerlifting.”
During the summer or outside of school, she plays tournament ball in softball. West plays for the Oklahoma Angels softball team out of Ardmore, Oklahoma. The organization has six different age groups ranging from eight years and up to 14 and up for fast pitch. During July, the team won the national softball tournament held in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
West stated playing with the Angels has helped her grow as a person and in teamwork. She said it helped her meet new people and is overall a good organization.
West said her two favorite sports to play are golf and softball. She joined powerlifting in high school, during the 2020-2021 school year where she qualified for state and got runner-up. She and a teammate, who also got runner-up, were the first girls from Sulphur to qualify.
When she is not playing any sports, she likes to do art and play in the band.
Now that school is starting, West is looking forward to growing as a person. Her goal is to continue to keep her grades up and do well in sports to prepare for senior year. After graduation, she is already planning to attend Northeastern State University in Tahlequah and major in Optometry.
