WETUMKA, Okla. – How much frybread can you eat? That is the question on Wetumka Indian Community organizers’ minds as they prepare to host their upcoming frybread eating contest on Dec. 14. The event is a first for the community as they raise money for general funds. This is not the first fundraiser for the community, however they intend on making the fry bread eating contest an annual event.
Ryan Herrod (Mvskoke/Thlopthlocco) is in charge of economic development for the community. Herrod has been a member of the community for almost a decade and has served as the former chairman. Many of Ryan Herrod’s family are members of the community as well. Serving in these various positions has allowed Ryan Herrod to meet members of other communities from across the reservation.
“It’s a good process, it taught me a lot and I am still learning.” Ryan Herrod said. “There’s a lot that goes into running a community.”
The community has a committee for every age group that attends gatherings. They hosted a youth slam dunk contest, a halloween costume mushball tournament and will host a grab-and-go Christmas event.
Ryan Herrod is a fan of frybread. Although he will not be competing in this year’s contest, Ryan Herrod believes he can eat at least 10 pieces of frybread. When asked how he prefers his frybread prepared, Ryan Herrod responded simply, “I need it to taste good.”
Frybread found at fundraisers can vary in size depending on the chef. According to Ryan Herrod, Wetumka’s frybread will be smaller, about the diameter of a water bottle.
Behind the scenes in the kitchen are Ryan Herrod’s son, Kainoa Herrod and mother, Paula Herrod. Kainoa Herrod is a high school sophomore and wants to be a cook. He enjoys preparing frybread just the way he likes it. According to Ryan Herrod, the contest is open to anyone with a stomach and a competitive spirit.
“It’s for everyone. We’re calling out to the other communities as well,” Ryan Herrod said. “If you want to participate, come on down. It’s for everyone of every nationality. If you’re hungry and you like frybread, come on down and let’s see who the winner is.”
The Wetumka Indian Community Frybread Eating Contest will take place Saturday, Dec. 14 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The contest is open to the public, the entry fee for contestants is $5. The contest will feature three categories; Men, Women and kids. Concessions will include beans, stew, chicken and dumplings, chili, sofkee and drinks.
