OKMULKEE, Oklv. – Since 2014, the Muscogee Nation’s Youth Services department has been working to help youth ages 12 to 24 to empower and enrich themselves while promoting health, resources, community support and local activism. On Oct. 10, MNYS celebrated the tenth anniversary of its work on the reservation by holding an open house, “come and go” event at its office in Okmulgee.
The events included a handful of booths for visitors to check out, including a photo op spot, an area with free food and drinks for all who visited, tables for visitors to speak to the staff at MNYS, games and contest tables, where people could win various prizes, and a table dedicated to the Mvskoke Royalty and the Muscogee (Creek) Nation Scholarship Pageant that MNYS hosts.
Mvskoke Media got a chance to speak to MNYS about their Youth Council and other services they provide.
“We have our [Youth Council] meetings every second Saturday of the month. We invite all Muscogee Creek Nation students to come here. We provide great opportunities for leadership skills, public speaking skills, and there’s even travel opportunities that are involved. So it’s just a really great experience for these kids to come out and meet other Creek citizens as well, and get involved with the community as well.” MCN Youth Services Digital and Social Media Coordinator Ticara Turner said in a statement to Mvskoke Media.
